Farm Coast Region

Artist Statement

Inspiration finds me in quiet moments of observation, where I’m reminded that the world is larger than my perceptions of it. It finds me in a sunset, in towers of sunlit cumulus clouds, in the sound of spring peepers in early April, reminding me warm summer nights are on the way. This body of work captures quiet moments in nature, telling the story of New England’s Farm Coast through an exploration of native ecology.

My creative process begins with preliminary sketches based on memory. As sketches become fully formed ideas, I begin referencing photos I’ve taken while out in the field. I collage creatures from my wildlife photography into landscapes I’ve photographed. Within these images, I find undertones of purples and pinks, greens and oranges, and saturate them in my finalized pieces to craft brighter and bolder palettes.

In my large oil paintings I capture the region’s vast skies, and the beauty of where picturesque clouds meet Atlantic seas, or rolling farm fields. In more intimate scaled works, I capture predators at rest, and prey as they creep through sun dabbled forest floors.  This body of work invites viewers to enjoy a moment of respite, while visually exploring quiet moments of natural beauty.
